Jewelry Materials & Care

Know your piece.

The material and finish affect how a piece looks, wears, and should be cared for. Read the specifications for the exact option you select, including the chain, clasp, posts, and decorative parts where listed.

Listed material or finish What it tells you
Solid gold A gold alloy throughout the specified component. Check the stated karat and which parts it applies to.
Gold-filled A bonded layer of gold over a base metal. It is different from solid gold and from gold plating.
Gold-plated or vermeil A gold surface over another metal. Check the stated base metal and finish details for the individual piece.
Sterling silver A silver alloy. Check whether an additional plated finish is present.
Stones Read the named stone type. Cubic zirconia, moissanite, lab-grown diamond, and natural diamond are different materials.

Keep the finish looking its best

Follow the manufacturer's directions for the material and finish. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, dry pieces before storage, and keep them separately to reduce scratching and tangling. Remove jewelry before activities that the supplier's care instructions advise against.

Do not assume a piece is waterproof, suitable for every sensitivity, or appropriate for an initial piercing unless the exact product information supports that use.

Piercing details matter

Fashion jewelry and jewelry for a new or healing piercing have different requirements. Ask a qualified piercer about fit, material documentation, and aftercare when needed.

Inspect before wearing

Check the piece and fastening on arrival. If an item looks damaged, incomplete, or different from your order, contact us with photographs before wearing it.
